Imagine a typical day as an online student. You may watch a live lecture on your laptop, asking questions or contacting your tutor by email about an assignment. You don’t need to be in the same room for all this. But you can still talk, ask questions, and engage in learning. This is where digital communication in online learning comes in.
However, managing all these different forms of communication alongside lectures, assignments, discussions, and deadlines can sometimes feel overwhelming. There may be days when students have several classes to attend and struggle to keep up with everything happening online. In such situations, some students may even consider looking for support, and they end up with internet searches like, ” Can I pay someone to take my online class?” Whenever overwhelmed with academic workload. And it actually works in most of the cases and helps students to have hectic-free learning experience. This is all possible with digital communication that lets students connect and resolve their academic difficulties.
Let’s explore more about it below.
What is Digital Communication in Online Learning?
Digital communication in online learning is the exchange of information using electronic means of communication such as mobile devices, tablets, or computers.
This communication usually occurs between:
- Students and teachers
- Students and classmates
- Students and university staff
- Student teams collaborating in groups
- Students and wider learning communities
For instance, an e-mail sent to a lecturer about an assignment is considered digital communication. If you respond in an online class, that’s digital communication as well. It is, as such, much wider than message sending on the Internet.
Importance of Digital Communication in Online Learning
Communication happens very naturally in a traditional class setup. But online learning eliminates a lot of this physical interaction. Hence, communication needs to be done digitally. Digital communication is a capability to work, study, and research in collaboration, regardless of time and location.
Digital communication helps students to:
- Ask questions when they don’t understand subject-related queries and concepts
- Receive feedback
- Participate in discussions
- Work with classmates
- Get to know tutors
- Provide ideas and resources to others
- Get updates on their class
- Experience a sense of belonging to the learning community
- While leveraging visual learning tools
It is very important for distance students who may not be able to have regular face-to-face contact with their university.
Types of Digital Communication
There are two main types of digital communication that are used in academics. Let’s explore them one by one:
Synchronous Communication
Synchronous communication is real-time communication. All participants are talking simultaneously.
Examples include:
- Live online lectures
- Video conferences
- Virtual seminars
- Live chats
- Online tutorials
- Updates around assignment deadlines
- Virtual group discussions
Online learning platforms use digital communication options to help students learn visually, effectively, and efficiently.
Asynchronous Communication
Asynchronous means that not everyone needs to be online at the same time. You can send and reply as appropriate.
Examples include:
- Emails
- Discussion boards
- Online forums
- Recorded lecture comments
- Course announcements
- Shared documents
- Learning platform messages
According to The Open University, discussion forums and posted messages can be considered as asynchronous communications.
The Communication Technologies Commonly Used by Students in the Digital Age
There are many online tools that may be used in an online course. Here are the top ones:
E-mail continues to be one of the key forms of communication between students and tutors and university personnel.
You can use it to:
- Inquire about an assignment
- Request clarification
- Discuss something about learning
- Contact student support
- Arrange a meeting
Emails can serve as a means of formal communication, and students should maintain a professional and clear email.
Video Conferencing
With a video platform, some of the classroom experience can be recreated in an online environment.
Students can:
- Attend lectures
- Join tutorials
- Ask questions
- Take part in group discussions
- Present projects
- Talk to tutors face-to-face
Discussion Forums
Forums provide a space for students to have conversations about subjects in the course, which occur outside of the live sessions. A good discussion post is more than simply writing, “I agree.”
You may state your position, provide an example, pose a question, or answer a student’s question in an appropriate manner.
Learning Management Systems
Often, universities provide a virtual learning environment or learning platform that students use to communicate with classmates and teachers and gain access to course information.
These platforms can include:
- Announcements
- Course materials
- Assignment information
- Discussion boards
- Feedback
- Messages
- Online activities
- Shared documents
Having a better understanding of how to use LMS platforms helps students engage interactively in online learning sessions and achieve better performance. For instance, a finance student may enroll in an online course but struggle to perform well if they are unfamiliar with the LMS platform. Eventually, without proper guidance, they may lose interest and start searching the internet for solutions, even asking questions like, “Can I pay someone to take my finance class?” A lack of guidance can create unnecessary confusion and make online learning more difficult.
How do Students Communicate Better Online?
It is very important for students to communicate better online, especially when they need to ask questions, clarify doubts, or work with their professors and classmates. However, there are situations when students can get stuck with a difficult class or struggle to keep up with their coursework. In such cases, they may reach out to an expert and ask, Can you take my online class? This can give them some time to catch up, brush up their skills, and return to their studies with a better understanding of the subject.
Here is what students do to communicate better online:
Choose the Right Communication Method
- Not all tools are appropriate for all situations.
- A short answer could be appropriate for a course discussion board.
- Choose the method that suits your action.
Ensure Academic Email Messages Are Professional
Be respectful and formal while writing emails. Include:
- Useful subject line
- A greeting
- The reason for your contact and/or question
- Relevant details
- A polite closing
Don’t post a message saying:
“Sir, I have a doubt.”
Rather, tell what you need help with. This will save time for you and your professor.
What are the Barriers to Digital Communication?
While there are numerous benefits to digital communication, it’s not always simple.
Too Many Notifications
Overuse of email and messages can be distracting.
Technical Problems
Poor internet connection and software issues can hamper digital communication.
Information Overload
Students may receive messages via email or university channels, as well as group chats, making it challenging to determine which ones need to be addressed first.
Just recently, Jisc has also published a report about HE students in the UK raising concerns about the usability of platforms, connectivity and digital skills, as well as clear communication of what support is available. Digital communication overload is a problem that can be avoided. There are ways to avoid digital communication overload. Not all the questions have to be answered right away.
Instead:
- Frequently monitor key university communication channels.
- Be aware of the locations of official announcements.
- Enable or disable unwanted alerts.
- Not all group chats require an alert.
- Organise your inbox.
- Sort out important emails from academics and other less critical communications.
- Maintain communication in the appropriate location.
If your university requires questions on assignments to be submitted through a certain platform, do not send them through other platforms that are not relevant to the question. Set boundaries. Online doesn’t mean all day, every day.
Final Thoughts
Digital communication is not just a matter of using various apps and platforms. It is a question of knowing what to say, how to say it, and where to say it. You could be in a live class, responding to a discussion board, writing to your tutor, or collaborating in a group project. Whatever you communicate online is a part of your learning.
The more that you practice communicating online, the more easily you will participate, collaborate, and receive the assistance you need during your studies.
